Here’s an easy DIY your kids will love. And I mean love in the ‘you’re the coolest mom in the world’ kind of way – the kind of outpouring that’s usually reserved for acquiescing to Sponge Bob Square Pants or allowing popcorn for dinner. Here’s what you do: buy black PJs and draw on them with glow-in-the-dark fabric paint. Done!
Supplies needed:
- Black pants and shirt. We got these inexpensive pieces for a boy and a girl at Wal-Mart
- Glow in the dark fabric paint
- Halloween stencil. I used a couple of these bat shapes
Trace or free hand a simple Halloween shape onto the shirt and pants with the fabric paint. You don’t even need a paintbrush! Caroline got a spiderweb motif and Henry got various sizes of bats. Let the paint dry and you’re done.
You can let the kids play outside a bit before bedtime to “charge” the paint. The more sunlight it gets, the brighter it glows.
Getting a good picture of these actually glowing is nigh impossible with squirmy kids – but you get the idea! I’d recommend turning the PJs inside out when washing, but of course I haven’t bothered to do this. Luckily, the paint has held up really well. One bat lost an eyeball, but a one-eyed bat is even spookier, right?
P.S. You can make glow in the dark trick-or-treat bags too. Check out the tutorial right over here.
Oh my gosh how fun!! I remember as a kid using puffy paint to decorate shirts for myself. My kids would absolutely love decorating Halloween pjs.
Who’s kids did you use to do the photo shoot? Surely they can’t be yours? They’re too grown up and BIG. Oh my goodness Stephanie. They have grown up. What a cute idea!

SO CUTE! I love that first picture of them getting all into the Halloween spirit. I know what we’re doing this weekend!
This is the cutest thing ever
I wish I had some little ones in my life to do this for

Wow! My sister will love this idea! Great!!
They are so cute! The PJs and the kids. 🙂 I remember having such a fascination with anything glow-in-the-dark when I was a kid!
Henry was wearing these last night and he said, ‘I’m not glowing!’ There really need to be more kid problems that can be solved just by turning out the lights 🙂
Oh wow! This looks great. It fun to do things like this.
