We’ve partnered with Article to create this post.
Last year I bought new patio furniture. This year I had to throw it away. In one year the wood had completely fallen apart. I made some unwise decisions too, like white sofa cushions. Not super smart with three kids who are messy popsicle eaters. This year I got the chance to do a makeover with modern, well-made furniture from Article.
If you haven’t heard of Article, you’ll love the simple, beautiful furniture at reasonable prices that all ships for just $49. And my favorite part, they assemble everything (if you opt for the $169 upcharge). (Also: their Memorial Day Sale is going on right now, through May 28th, and it’s pretty huge: many items are up to 50% off!)
I used the small porch space to create a comfy seating area with a raised vegetable garden. The kids have wanted to do a garden forever, but every time we plant something at ground level it’s quickly destroyed by our dog Bono.
Here’s a quick before shot of the deck. It was a total mess that needed a good power wash. We cut down a tree that was dropping all kinds of black gunk in this corner. You can see my old metal chairs and table that were super uncomfortable (we donated those).
In the past I’ve made the mistake of trying to do too much with the porch. Even with a couch, a table, chairs, and a grill nothing was very functional. You couldn’t sit and talk, and you couldn’t really eat a meal there either! This time around I just wanted a cozy seating area where I can entertain and everyone can sit.
This Ora Slate Gray sofa was the answer to my prayers. It’s stylish and durable with water-resistant wicker and cushions with solid acacia legs. And it’s dark! I’ve learned my lesson with all white. We have a lot going on in our backyard with an enormous play set and a bright red fence so rather than add more colors, I kept it simple with dark tones.
The paint job we did on the deck a year ago isn’t holding up super well either so I used a Stria rug to cover it up. It’s made from recycled plastic bottles! The material adds a little extra spring to the rug and I love that it combines style with sustainability. Another lesson learned from not investing more wisely in my patio furniture from last year.
But my favorite addition are the Daisy Lounge Chairs. I’ve been crushing on rattan this year, and these adorable chairs are fun to look at and sturdy enough to sit in. And they’re comfortable! I basically wanted every one of Article’s lounge chair options.
These Tana stools, made from traceable and certifiably sourced teak, are perfect for extra seating or as side tables. The succulents from our Cinco de Mayo centerpiece found a new home outside.
Here’s the full shot of the porch (that we hung out the upstairs window to get). Don’t you just want to sit out there with a cold drink? Bono and I do!
