Babies need a lot of stuff, y’all. I’m in the process of stocking a nursery right now and the thought of spending all that money on things that will only be used for a year or so is pretty painful. Not to mention the waste! That’s why I’m all about seeking out sustainable and zero waste baby essentials.
Heirloom toys that can be passed down to the next kiddo (or even the grandkids!), items that can be repurposed after the baby grows out of them, and reusable nursery staples like wipes and diapers can help you save money and the planet’s resources. Which is totally a win, right? Here are some of my favorite eco-friendly and zero waste baby essentials.
Safety 1st RIVA Ultra Lightweight Travel Stroller // I love that this stroller is made in the US, but what I love even more is that it’s made from recycled materials. There’s no way to avoid plastic in a stroller, but knowing this one is made sustainably makes me feel much better about the purchase!
Baeo Baby Gift Set // Perfect for a shower gift, this set comes in a reusable ethically-sourced bag and each item is organic so you can feel good about using them on baby’s delicate skin.
Design Dua Moses Basket // Instead of a bassinet that has only one purpose (and will only be used for a few months!), a Moses basket can be used for storage once baby grows out of it. The ones from Design Dua are absolutely gorgeous!
Green Cactus Baby Rattle Teething Ring // If giving a baby plastic toys to chew on makes you nervous, this handmade teether made with cotton and beeswax-finished wood is a safer (and super fun!) alternative.
Crochet Play Mat // When baby grows out of using this beautiful mat for tummy and gym time, repurpose it as a rug for the playroom.
Reusable Flannel Wipes // I bought these organic cloth wipes after having my first kiddo and they’re still going strong almost 4 years later. We use them as napkins and hand wipes for sticky messes, but they’re also a great zero waste alternative to disposable diaper wipes.
Newborn Cloth Diaper // And of course, we can’t talk about zero waste baby essentials without talking about cloth diapers! I love buying handmade ones because the patterns are much cuter.
UPPAbaby MESA Merino Wool Car Seat // Typical car seats are doused with flame retardants which aren’t good for the planet, your baby, or people working in factories. This car seat is made with merino wool which is naturally resistant to flames.
Bee’s Wrap // These reusable wraps are awesome for wrapping snacks, half-eaten pieces of fruit, and other edibles without the plastic.
Lifefactory Glass Baby Bottles // Just say no to plastic baby bottles! The silicone sleeves on these make them less prone to slipping and breaking and a sippy cup topper lets you repurpose your bottles as toddler cups.
MilkBarn Organic Cotton Romper // Many baby pajamas made with synthetic fabrics are sprayed with chemical flame retardants. Not good! Organic cotton isn’t just softer, but when fitted snugly it doesn’t need to be treated with flame retardants.
HEVEA Rubber Pacifier // If you or baby aren’t a fan of plastic or silicone pacifiers, try these natural rubber ones. Because they’re made with natural rubber, they’re biodegradable so they can be thrown right in your compost bin when you’re done with them.
Organic Cotton Baby Blanket // Muslin swaddles are nice, but I’m an even bigger fan of these cotton blankies from Lola & Stella because they’re more durable. My 4-year-old still sleeps with hers every night!
Monochrome Rubber Duck // Everyone’s favorite bath toy got a stylish makeover! And since this one is made with real rubber and not plastic, it’s compostable.
