For those who celebrate Christmas, the iconic scents of the holiday can evoke a particularly poignant sort of magic. Think cider or wine mulling on the stove, chestnuts roasting in a cast iron pan, gingerbread baking, oranges finally in season, evergreen trees inside the house… and when it’s all wrapped up in twinkle lights, wrapping paper, and a dash of snow (at least in the Northern Hemisphere, if we’re lucky!), it’s hard to deny the old festive tug at the heartstrings.
6 Christmas Diffuser Blends
Whether your Christmastime rituals involve decorating the tree with loved ones, baking up a storm for a neighborhood get-together, wrapping presents while listening to the old-timey holiday tunes, binging on all of the Hallmark movies, or snuggling up with your nearest and dearest and exchanging tokens of love and appreciation, these are singular moments that deserve an extra sprinkle of special to enhance the mood.
Light some candles or a toasty fire, string up some twinkle lights, and try one of our special Christmas diffuser blends to kick the holiday vibe up a notch or two! Fir trees, ginger and spice, peppermint, and fresh citrus…these are some of the most evocative scents of the season. And while we love these blends for those special Christmas moments, they would also make for some excellent air freshening scents all winter long, perfect for après-ski/skating parties, snowed-in board game nights, to add some hygge style coziness, or whenever you could use a festive pick-me-up.
These diffuser blend recipes are meant to be diluted in 200ml of water.
The Pomander
Pomanders are those festive fruit ornaments—whole oranges bedazzled by dried clove buds—that smell absolutely heavenly. When I was young, if we didn’t have the patience to make our own, we’d slice up some orange peel and add them in with a few cloves and water into the copper kettle, and simmer them slowly over the wood stove to scent the home. The good news is that you don’t need a copper kettle, or a wood burning fireplace—this simple diffuser blend hits the pomander bullseye.
- 5 drops sweet orange oil
- 4 drops clove oil
Oh Christmas Tree
I always insist on the real deal Christmas tree, mostly for that unbeatable scent of fir filling my home. Of course many people opt for artificial (and sadly, scentless) trees, and even I can admit that real thing loses its punchy fragrance after a week or so inside. But what if you still want to enjoy that forest-fresh scent? Try this blend, which combines fir, pine, and cypress. A single evergreen note works well too if what’s what you’ve got on hand, but when these notes are combined, it sings like a forest.
- 3 drops balsam, white, or Douglas fir oil
- 3 drops pine oil
- 3 drops cypress oil
Gingerbread
If you’re anything like me, you’ll be up to your elbows in baking over the holidays, but nothing feels as festive as when the gingerbread is rolled out and holiday cookie cutters clutter the counter. If you want that spicy kick of ginger without bothering with the oven, this blend is all you need. Be warned; you may want to stock the pantry, as it just might spark a craving!
- 2 drops nutmeg oil
- 3 drops ginger oil
- 2 drops cinnamon oil
- 2 drops clove oil
- 2 drops black pepper oil
Very Merry
This effortless blend is sweet and warm, a perfect choice for cozying up during the winter season. It’s simple, versatile, and comforting, and agreeable enough for a signature home scent over the holidays.
- 3 drops sweet orange oil
- 3 drops ginger oil
- 2 drops cinnamon oil
Candy cane
Another key scent of the Christmas season has to be the candy cane. This blend evokes the ubiquitous holiday candy to a T—wintergreen and vanilla lend a softening sweetness to the mint, setting it apart from the more basic peppermint oil that we use year round.
- 3 drops peppermint oil
- 3 drops wintergreen oil
- 2 drops vanilla oil
Silent night incense blend
Some spiritual traditions incorporate the heady smoke of incense into the rites and rituals around Christmastime, and we’d be remiss not to include a recipe that works with those deep, rich scents here. If you enjoy smoky, resinous essential oils, this blend–brightened up slightly by the orange–might be the perfect way to lend an air of quietude and reflection to the holiday.
- 3 drops frankincense oil
- 2 drops myrrh oil
- 2 drops sandalwood oil
- 3 drops sweet orange oil
Whether the holiday vibe you’re going for is prayerful or playful, joy-filled or simply delicious, try using one of these unique and festive diffuser blends and see how they work their aromatherapeutic magic, transforming your home into a cozy, winter wonderland one sniff at a time.
